Expect to wait 6 months to 2 years after the filing deadline before receiving your settlement payment. The exact timeline depends on court schedules, the number of claims filed, and whether anyone appeals the settlement.
The Settlement Payment Timeline
- Filing deadline closes. This is the date you see advertised — the last day to submit a claim. This is NOT when you get paid.
- Claims review period (1–4 months). The claims administrator reviews all submitted claims, verifies eligibility, and calculates individual payouts. Fraudulent or deficient claims may be rejected.
- Final court approval hearing (1–3 months after filing deadline). The judge holds a fairness hearing to approve the final distribution. This is a formality in most cases but can take time to schedule.
- Objection and appeal period (60–90 days after approval). Class members or objectors can appeal the court's approval. Most settlements proceed without appeals, but when they occur, they add 12–18 months to the timeline.
- Payment distribution. Once all legal hurdles are cleared, the administrator sends payments. By check (allow 2–3 weeks mailing time), PayPal/Venmo (instant after processing), or prepaid card (1–2 weeks to arrive).
Why Some Settlements Take Longer
- Large settlements with millions of claimants take longer to process
- Settlements involving ongoing injunctive relief (the company must also change its practices) are more complex
- Appeals by objectors can add over a year
- Disputes over attorney fees can delay the final approval
Tip: Save your claim confirmation number. If the payment hasn't arrived within 2 years of the filing deadline, you can contact the claims administrator to check status. Checks that go uncashed are reissued during the distribution process.
