Trust & Safety FAQ

Do Class Action Settlements Show Up on My Credit Report?

No. Filing a class action claim or receiving a settlement payment does not appear on your credit report and has absolutely no impact on your credit score.

Why Settlements Don't Affect Your Credit

Credit reports track credit-related activities — loans, credit cards, payment history, bankruptcies, and collections. Receiving money from a class action settlement is not a credit transaction. The settlement administrator does not report anything to Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. No inquiry is made, no account is opened, and no debt is recorded.

Participating in a class action also does not indicate that you're in financial difficulty, which is the primary concern people have. Quite the opposite — you're collecting money owed to you.

What About Employment Background Checks?

Class action participation also does not appear on criminal background checks or employment background checks. These checks look at criminal records, employment history, and references — not civil litigation participation.

The Only Exception: Employment Settlements

The one scenario where things could theoretically get complicated is in an employment-related settlement where you're a named plaintiff (not just a class member). Named plaintiffs in employment litigation have a public court record. However, this doesn't affect credit and rarely comes up in background checks for most jobs.

Will Filing Affect My Relationship with the Defendant Company?

This is a more legitimate concern. Some people worry that filing a claim against their bank or insurance company will affect their account relationship. In practice, companies legally cannot retaliate against class members for filing legitimate claims. Doing so would expose them to additional litigation. That said, if you have an ongoing relationship with a company, you may want to understand the settlement dynamics before filing — though for most consumer settlements, this is a non-issue.
