The class-action lawsuit alleged that Visa and Mastercard engaged in an anticompetitive scheme to monopolize the debit card services market and charge merchants artificially inflated interchange fees by tying merchant acceptance of their debit card services, Visa Check and MasterMoney, to merchant acceptance of their credit card services via a so-called “Honor All Cards rule.” Settlements with Visa and Mastercard secured categories of relief that court decisions valued at as much as $25-87 billion. more » $14.7 BILLION – The largest settlement in history against an automaker Volkswagen Emissions Litigation Hagens Berman’s Steve Berman served as a court-appointed member of the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee in the Volkswagen Dieselgate consumer litigation and part of the settlement negotiating team. The firm was the first in the nation to file a lawsuit against Volkswagen for its emissions cheating. The settlement is the largest brought against an automaker. more » $1.67 BILLION Volkswagen Franchise Dealers Litigation The firm was named lead counsel representing Volkswagen franchise dealers in a class-action lawsuit in which the settlement represents a result of nearly full damages for the class. The lawsuit states that in the midst of VW’s Dieselgate scandal, it withheld information about the scandal from its franchise dealers, even though it was aware of the issue since at least as early as 2014. more » $1.6 BILLION - The largest settlement against an automaker at its time Toyota Motor Corp. Unintended Acceleration Litigation Steve Berman was selected by the court as class counsel on behalf of consumers experiencing sudden unintended acceleration in certain Toyota vehicles. Berman, who did not nominate himself for the role in the case was selected by the judge above attorneys who submitted themselves. Berman went on to achieve a settlement in the case which was at the time, the largest in history brought against an automaker. more » $1.45 BILLION Meracord Hagens Berman’s team of attorneys secured a default judgment on behalf of consumers for useless debt-settlement conspiracy, following years of plaintiff victories in the case. Hagens Berman filed its lawsuit in 2011 on behalf of consumers nationwide claiming the company violated Washington law and the federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. more » $1.3 BILLION Hyundai Kia Engine Litigation Hagens Berman is co-lead counsel in this case accusing Hyundai and Kia of selling vehicles with failure-prone Theta II GDI engines that can catch fire and suffer engine failure. The approved settlement includes lifetime warranty against the engine defect, software installation aimed to detect and prevent the engine defect, reimbursements for repair-related costs and lost value due to engine failures or fires, and payment for repair delays.
