Google LLC, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., is one of the most frequently litigated technology companies in the United States. Google users have recovered hundreds of millions of dollars through class action settlements targeting illegal location data collection, the 2018 Google+ data breach affecting 52 million users, Google Play Store antitrust violations, Pixel smartphone hardware defects, and Incognito Mode privacy tracking. In 2024, Google agreed to a landmark $5 billion settlement over Incognito Mode tracking — one of the largest privacy settlements ever reached. If you use Google services, Android devices, or Google apps, you may have multiple open settlement claims worth filing today.

Google's Biggest Class Action Settlements

Google's largest recent settlement is the 2024 Incognito Mode case, where Google agreed to pay $5 billion (later revised to approximately $4.75 billion) to resolve claims that it tracked users who believed they were browsing privately in Chrome's Incognito Mode. Google also reached a $700 million settlement in 2023 with state attorneys general over Google Play Store anticompetitive practices, providing cash payouts to consumers who paid artificially inflated prices for Android apps, subscriptions, and in-app purchases. The 2018 Google+ data breach exposed personal information for 52 million users, resulting in a class action settlement with claims of up to $12 per class member. Google has also settled cases over Pixel phone microphone defects, Google Assistant voice recordings, and unauthorized collection of location data even when users turned location services off.

Google Incognito Mode Privacy Settlement

The Google Incognito Mode class action — formally Brown v. Google — alleged that Google continued collecting browsing data, search history, and site visits from users who opened Chrome in Incognito Mode, despite the browser's promise of enhanced privacy. The settlement requires Google to delete billions of data records collected from Incognito users and to display clearer disclosures about what data Incognito Mode does and does not protect. Class members may be entitled to monetary recovery — check the settlement cards above for the current claim status and filing deadline. The class period covers anyone who used Chrome's Incognito Mode between June 2016 and January 2024.

Google Play Store Antitrust Settlement

In 2023, Google settled with 50 state attorneys general and direct consumer plaintiffs for $700 million over Google Play Store anticompetitive practices. The settlement provides $630 million for consumers who purchased paid Android apps, subscriptions, or in-app purchases through the Google Play Store between August 2016 and September 2023. Eligible consumers may claim between $2 and potentially hundreds of dollars depending on their Google Play spending history. The settlement also requires Google to allow alternative billing systems in the Play Store for a three-year period, reducing Google's ability to collect up to 30% commissions on all digital transactions.

Google Location Tracking & Data Privacy Settlements

Google reached a $391.5 million multistate settlement in 2022 over deceptive location tracking practices — the largest privacy settlement in U.S. history at the time. The settlement resolved allegations that Google continued recording and storing user location data even after users disabled the "Location History" setting on their devices, through a separate "Web & App Activity" setting that users did not know was also collecting location data. Additionally, Google has faced class actions over Google Assistant storing voice recordings without consent, Gmail scanning email content for advertising purposes, and Nest device data collection.
