CFPB $250 Million Settlement — Junk Fees and Denied Rewards
In 2023, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ordered Bank of America to pay $250 million in penalties and restitution after finding the bank illegally charged customers duplicate nonsufficient fund (NSF) fees — charging the same declined transaction multiple times — and systematically withheld credit card rewards that customers had earned and were promised. The CFPB found BofA also opened accounts and credit cards for customers without their consent, generating fees for products they never requested. Affected customers who were charged these duplicate fees or denied promised cash-back and rewards between 2012 and 2022 are entitled to restitution. Some customers are being automatically compensated; others may need to file a claim through the settlement process.
