What Is Unclaimed Property?
When financial accounts or assets go unclaimed for a certain period (typically 3–5 years), companies are required by law to hand over those funds to the state. The state holds them indefinitely — until the rightful owner or heir claims them.
Common types of unclaimed property:
- Bank accounts and savings accounts
- Life insurance policy proceeds
- Stock dividends and mutual fund distributions
- Utility security deposits
- Uncashed paychecks
- Safe deposit box contents
- Tax refunds and government checks
How to Search for Free
Searching is completely free through official state websites. You should never pay a third party to find or claim your property.
Steps:
- Step 1: Visit your state's official unclaimed property website (linked below)
- Step 2: Search by your name and/or previous addresses
- Step 3: Check states where you previously lived or worked
- Step 4: Submit a claim online — most states process claims in 4–8 weeks
