State Farm's Major Class Action Settlements
State Farm's largest class action settlement was the landmark Avery v. State Farm case, where an Illinois jury initially awarded $1.186 billion against State Farm for using non-OEM (aftermarket) replacement parts in auto repair claims while charging policyholders for OEM-quality parts. Although the verdict was overturned on appeal, the litigation led to lasting changes in State Farm's parts specification practices and industry-wide scrutiny of "like kind and quality" parts standards. State Farm has also settled class actions in multiple states over systematic undervaluation of totaled vehicles — using a valuation method that produced lower payouts than market value. State Farm paid $250 million to settle a class action in California over underpayment of diminished value claims following at-fault accident repairs.
