Johnson & Johnson's Biggest Mass Tort Settlements
Johnson & Johnson's largest litigation exposure involves its talc-based baby powder products. Thousands of women who used J&J Baby Powder and Shower to Shower products developed ovarian cancer and mesothelioma, which plaintiffs allege was caused by asbestos contamination in the talc. J&J has paid over $5 billion in talc-related verdicts and settlements and agreed to a $8.9 billion global talc settlement in 2023 — later restructured after bankruptcy litigation. J&J also paid $2.5 billion to settle DePuy Pinnacle metal-on-metal hip implant claims, where the implants released metal ions into surrounding tissue causing severe pain, tissue death, and the need for revision surgery. J&J's Janssen Pharmaceuticals subsidiary paid $2.2 billion to resolve criminal and civil allegations over improper marketing of the antipsychotic drug Risperdal.
